When do I move in?
New Student Orientation (NSO) begins Wednesday, August 23 2017 for all first-year domestic, international, exchange, and transfer students. In June, all students will receive their housing assignment and their assigned move-in time for Wednesday August 23. All assignments will be posted on Campus Express. Freshmen may not move in prior to August 23 except for extenuating circumstances or pre-orientation programs (see below).

What pre-orientation programs are available and how may I obtain more information about them?
Several of Penn's departments offer pre-orientation programs to introduce new students to campus life and traditions prior to official orientation programs. Information about these programs will be mailed by the individual departments over the course of the summer; however, applications and information are also available on the web. To access information on PennQuest, PennArts, PennCORP, PennGreen, and PENNacle, visit the Office of Student Affairs' Pre-Orientation page. For information on the PENNCAP/Pre-Freshman Program, visit Equity and Access Programs. For information on The Center for Africana Studies pre-freshmen program, visit Summer Institute for Pre-Freshmen.

Do I have to go to all of the orientation events?
The mandatory events will be clearly labeled in the Calendar of Events you will receive upon your arrival to campus. However, a variety of non-mandatory events, including social and cultural programming, are extremely important to ease your adjustment to the Penn and Philadelphia communities. Once classes begin, you will not have this type of opportunity again to meet new people or to learn about the many resources available to you as a student.

How long should my family stay? What events can they attend?
On the official move-in day, Wednesday, August 23, activities for families will take place between 9am and 7pm. All activities after this time are for students only; families are strongly encouraged to depart on Wednesday evening to allow students to adjust to their new surroundings.

What hotel accommodations are available for my family during move-in?
See our Planning Your Trip page for hotel information.

What should I bring with me to campus?
For this and more information about moving to Penn, see the What To Bring page of the NSO website or Residential Services' Move-In page.

When is the best time to purchase books and where?
After you receive your first Penn course list in August, you can purchase your textbooks from the Penn Bookstore through Campus Express Online. You can get a jump on the semester by having them shipped to you now or reserved for pick up at the Bookstore when you arrive on campus. You may pay by credit card or charge to your student bill.

You can also purchase your books once you arrive on campus. Most books and course materials will be available in the following places:

When do classes begin?
